Wider Trends Effected By Texting

It seems that kids are paving the way for changes, both in the technology arena as well as socially. For instance if you ask over 90% of people which finger they use to press a doorbell with they would most likely say their index finger, but if you ask a group of kids who do an aweful lot of texting on the mobile phones then they are likely to say that they use their thumb. But why?

The answer lies in the use of the thumb as the primary texting finger and so where as the index finger for most people is the most natural “important” finger, kids have changed decades of programming just by texting with their old mobile phones and new smartphones.

A recent survey conducted by Intel shows that over 90% of people who use smartphones such as Blackberries and Apple’s iPhone only use a small percentage of the features due to the tiny keypad. Obviously these mobile devices were designed for adults, not kids. THis is probably the reason why Netbooks have taken off so amazingly, in fact there was a 63% rise in the purchase of Netbooks during the last part of 2008. The reason is that up until recently computers had to be big to accomodate the processing power to do simple tasks such as accessing the internet and writing documents, but now with the help of smaller CPUs such as Intel’s Atom phones are getting smarter and netbooks can be sufficient mobile computing device replacements.

So where will the future take us from now? Will mobile devices such as Palm’s Pre become redundant to netbooks, or will the kids grow up into adults and so force the technology to evolve with their requirements, thus producing smaller and smaller mobile phones or smartphones? Only time will tell.
