Oh joy! Yes our friends at Ryanair have now equipped 10 of their aircraft with the technology to allow their customers to use their mobile phones whilst in flight. The plan is to spread this technology top the rest of the fleet of 50 aircraft very soon.

So what will it cost to talk to mum, whilst you fly over the atlantic? About the same as you pay when roaming abroad. Yeah we had those massive shocks after a holiday in Portugal too! :-) So it’sw not cheap, but it will definitely appeal to the business fliers.

The Deputy Chief Exec Mr Millar reckons that “the main demand will be for texting”, and they are looking to sell mobile top up cards too. Once the flight is at crusing height customers will be allowed to use their phones, but must switch them off when taking off and landing.

The reason that mobiles don’t pose the possible safety risk that they did previously is because the planes will now carry mini phone masts. This means that the power used to communicate between the mobile and the mast will be greatly reduced.

Other airlines have been offering this service for a while including Emirates’ passengers, who have been able to make calls since July.

This could be really handy, or it could make flying REEEEEEALLy SUCK.
